Now launch Audacity 2.1.1, and use the File ➤ Open menu sequence and open the Prismatic Ideation FLAC file as shown in Figure 6-6. Then use the File ➤ Export Audio menu sequence, as seen on the left in Figure 6-6, which will convert a FLAC audio format into the PCM (Windows WAVE or Mac AIFF) file format.

In the Export Audio dialog shown in Figure 6-7, select the WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM option in Save as type, and then click the Save button. Leave the File name the same, so you can see in your file manager that the PCM file is 100 percent larger (31MB) than the same compressed FLAC (17MB). Both will exhibit the same exact (lossless) audio data quality. This is why FLAC is such an impressive format, as it can compress audio files 2X to 3X times while losing none of the original data, so it’s just like using a PCM format (uncompressed). Plus it does 24-bit HD audio to boot and 96 kHz, 192 kHz or 384 kHz as well.
